We are here to help you in the current cost of living crisis. Here are a few top tips to make your HEATING more efficient:

  1. Fit TRV’s (Thermosttic Radiator Valves): TRVs monitor the temperature of the air around the radiator, and automatically adjust the amount of hot water that enters the radiator. It is a great way of saving energy. Fit these to each radiator.
  2. Upgrade your Thermostat: Advanced thermostats can help reduce fuel consumption for many households. Try reducing this to a setting you are comfortable with.
  3. Zone your home. Creating zones inside your home ensures your only heat the rooms required, instead of the entire house. You will need also need TRV’s, and a thermostat with zoning capabilities. The correct zoning programme can be achieved via a smartphone app or the thermostat.
  4. Reduce the boiler temperature: Try turning the temperature down to 50/60 degrees. This should be done according to your own system eg 60 degrees for heating and 55 degrees for hot water. This can vary considerably, eg if you have under/ over sized radiators and an old boiler, so it is best to seek professional advice.
  5. Programmer: Review your timings & settings each season (Spring/ Summer/ Autumn/ Winter)
  6. Insulate. Homes can lose 25% of their heat through an un-insulated roof. Check your loft insulation, lag your tanks, pipes etc, and add a hot water cylinder jacket, to reduce heat loss.
  7. Draught proof: consider fitting draught -proofing strips around windows and doors to prevent valuable heat loss. Fill small gaps around pipework, floorboards & skirting. Maybe fit a draught excluder into the chimney of an unused/ open fireplace to prevent heat loss.
  8. Radiators: They need to be sized/ calculated correctly for each room.
  9. Upgrade your boiler: If your boiler needs:- replacement parts/ has become inefficient/ or in not a condensing boiler. Boilers pre-2005 are not condensing, and are more expensive to run. Your heating/ hot water is more than half your properties energy usage. It could save approximately £170 per year (based on an semi-detached house with trvs).
  10. Remember: You can always do a few star-jumps or pop-a-jumper-on if you get too cold!

Additional energy saving tips are listed below:-

  1. Lights: Swap your light bulbs to LED
  2. Heaters: Swap electric heaters to infrared heaters.
  3. Windows/ Doors/ Skirting/ Floorboards: Ensure any leaks/ draughts are sealed.
  4. Dry your clothes outside: If you use an airer inside, make sure you open your windows. (even on the latch) to avoid causing damp in the property.
  5. Use an air fryer: These are cheaper to run than conventional ovens.
  6. Open your curtains in Winter: to allow natural heat gain to warm your home.
  7. Close your curtains in Summer: to keep rooms cool and reduce using fans.
